SandyFord
You are probably wondering just what
this place, "SandyFord" is, right?
Well, "SandyFord" is the name of a
road. A dusty, little road way out in the
country. A dusty, little road way out
in the country and in the backwoods of
Arkansas.
(It's not really that far out, but it sure
seemed like it the first time I rode
down it.)
When my Dad retired from the
U.S. Air Force in 1974, he and Mom
bought some acreage out in the
country. I think it was about three
miles off a paved road.
I was almost 17 years old at the time, and living in the backwoods really wasn't my idea of living.
"It's just like a park!", Dad told me.
(It looked like a park that had never
been mowed!)
Despite all my teenage ranting and
raving, my brave parents homesteaded
way out there on SandyFord Road.
My brothers adapted right away. There were trees to climb and places to explore. Did I mention snakes? They were out there too.
After a lot of hard work, Dad and Mom had the place looking lovely. I can't say that I helped out a lot that summer.
I spent quite a few days with my Mema in town. Hey, a girl can't live without water! We caught rainwater to wash with before we had a useable well.
I remember washing my long hair
outside in the yard with that rainwater.

Spring 1974
I rode a bumpy, old school bus down the dusty roads to school every
day my Senior year. There were several rickety bridges (with no sides) that we had
to cross over. I would close my eyes and grit my teeth hoping that they would hold
up as we rumbled across.
When I got my first car (a brand new 1976 Toyota Celica ST), I was constantly washing it. Somehow, the dust always caught up with me. That old dirt road became a welcome sight, however, after driving through rush hour traffic in Little Rock.
My husband, David, and I got married on "the hill." That's what David called Dad
and Mom's place on SandyFord Road. I used to think that anyone that would come out there to pick me up on a date, must have really cared for me. :-)
